From Naples by way of Hackney...
Back in 2012 we lived just a stone’s throw from London’s brand new Olympic Park and the emerging food and drink scene growing in a quiet corner of Hackney Wick on the park’s Eastern canal border. With the promise of simple homemade pizzas and locally brewed beer, it wasn’t long before we discovered the delights of Crate Brewery.
Established in 2012 in a former print factory, this brewery (now Hackney Wick institution) was already creating delicious brews but, it was the pizza that won our hearts (and our bellies!).
Now living in the rolling hills of Derbyshire’s Peak District, a far cry from the hipster haven of Hackney Wick, we were craving a slice of Crate’s finest pizza. We’ve grabbed a copy of the menu and will be working our way through their almost unaltered offerings. After all, why mess with perfection.
First up, the classic Margherita with it’s simple tomato, basil and mozzarella topping. Alongside it’s the Spicy Salami, which may surprise you as it’s adorned with sweet and smoky chorizo (plus mozzarella and piquant dried chilli flakes). Plus, garlic bread because, everyone loves garlic bread.
We’ve assumed that their dough is a closely guarded secret so have opted for this simple classic recipe from Jamie Oliver. For the tomato base we simply reduced passata until thick.
